Message from the defective drug lawyers of Timothy H. David, P.A., Florida:
Crestor®, known generically as rosuvastatin, is one of a class of drugs called statins. Statins are prescribed, in conjunction with diet and exercise, for lowering cholesterol levels. Crestor® was approved by the FDA in August 2003, in spite of studies showing that those who take Crestor® experience increased risk of muscle toxicity and kidney failure, also known as “myopathy” or “rhabdomyolysis.” This side effect was more common among those patients taking the highest dose of 40 mg. However, the FDA decided that the risks of muscle toxicity were low enough that they were outweighed by the benefits of the drug.
Currently, on the “warnings” section of the product label, the FDA has indicated that patients at risk for muscle toxicity, including those over the age of 65, those with hypothyroidism, and/or those with renal insufficiency, should be more closely monitored while taking the drug. The European Union has also recently revised their Crestor® label to alert physicians and users to this increased risk. Moreover, FDA scientist Dr. David Graham named Crestor® among the most dangerous drugs available in recent a hearing before congress.
Though Crestor® is still on the market in the United States, more and more research suggests that it may be unsafe. The defective drug lawyers at our Florida practice are currently examining all injuries sustained through the use of Crestor®. If you have been injured by your use of Crestor®, we may be able to try your case. Simply contact the defective drug lawyers at our Florida practice today.
Crestor®’s most dangerous side effect is muscle toxicity and kidney failure, also known as “myopathy” or “rhabdomyolysis.” In rare cases, this disorder can cause kidney damage and failure of other organs, and can be life-threatening. In its onset, muscle toxicity is manifested as unexplained muscle pain or weakness. Patients taking Crestor® should contact their physician immediately if they feel any of the following:
If you or a family member has been harmed by any of Crestor®’s dangerous side effects, contact the defective drug lawyers of Florida’s Timothy H. David, P.A. to see how the law offers protection from this dangerous drug.
While everyone who takes Crestor® has increased risk of myopathy, patients who are over 65, have hypothyroidism, or renal insufficiency have a greater risk of developing the muscle disorder. The FDA has issued warnings to physicians to exercise caution when prescribing the drug to patients of this description. Moreover, certain sub-populations may have a higher risk of muscle toxicity, including certain subgroups of Asians and patients using cyclosporine and gemfibrozil. If you believe you may have any of these increased risk factors, discuss your risks and alternative therapies with your prescribing physician.
If you have been taking Crestor®, consult your physician about your risk for rhabdomyolysis, and be sure to inform them of any pre-existing conditions, drugs you are taking, and allergies. You and your physician can decide if your personal risks are worth the benefits of continuing Crestor® treatment. However, you should be aware of all potential adverse side effects of the drug, as well as FDA announcements and breaking research. If you experience any unexplained muscle pain, report it to your physician immediately and seek medical treatment, as soreness can be a sign of the onset of rhabdomyolysis. If caught early enough, serious injury may be avoided.
