Celebrex®: Stroke, Heart Attack and Other Side Effects - Florida Attorneys

Announcement from our Florida Celebrex® attorneys: Following the withdrawal of Merck’s Vioxx®, Celebrex® (or celecoxib), a drug used for similar pain relief purposes, was touted as a safer alternative. However, in recent Canadian newspaper reports, there is some indication that Celebrex® side effects may also include heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems. Spurred on by the Vioxx® recall, Pfizer, the maker of Celebrex®, is currently undertaking several long-term studies to prove that Celebrex® side effects do not include heart attack or stroke. Florida residents who use Celebrex® should exercise caution until studies prove the safety of the drug. Users should be aware of the symptoms of Celebrex® heart attack, stroke, and other side effects. Florida residents who have experienced cardiovascular problems while taking Celebrex® should contact our Florida Celebrex® attorneys to see what protection they are offered under federal law.

Celebrex® can cause severe side effects, even death, in patients who experience liver damage or stomach problems. If you have any of these symptoms, especially after long-term use of the drug, contact your doctor immediately and get checked for liver damage or ulcers.

For those patients who have allergies to sulfonamide drugs such as sulfadiazine, sulfisoxazole, Gantanol, and Thiosulfil, Celebrex® may be unsafe.

What’s more, Celebrex® may aggravate asthma by constricting the breathing passage. An allergy to sulfonamide drugs in conjunction with asthma can be life threatening while taking Celebrex®. Make sure your doctor knows that you have asthma, and take Celebrex® with caution.

Potential Celebrex® Side Effects – Heart Attack and Stroke

While Celebrex® side effects have not been proven to include heart attack or stroke, it is important to be aware of this risk. Canadian newspapers have reported cardiovascular dangers associated with Celebrex®, and Pfizer, the makers of Celebrex®, are currently conducting studies of the drug’s cardiovascular safety. While Pfizer insists on the drug’s safety, it is best to be aware of all potential risks prior to taking the drug. Potential cardiovascular problems include:

  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Death

If you experience chest pain, irregular heart rhythms, dizziness, loss of coordination, sudden headaches, or nausea it could be a symptom of Celebrex®-related heart attack or stroke. Florida residents should find emergency medical treatment and make sure that your care providers know you are using Celebrex®.

Who is at risk?

If you are using Celebrex®, as when you are using any drug, you should inform your doctor of any medication allergies and pre-existing conditions. For people who have experienced ulcers, internal bleeding, asthma, or liver conditions, Celebrex® side effects can be especially dangerous. Inform your doctor if you have had any of these conditions and they may be able to find alternative therapies that are equally effective.

What to do if you are a Celebrex® User

You should continue to use Celebrex® if your doctor advises it. However, if you experience any Celebrex® side effects, including cardiovascular problems, inform your physician and seek help immediately. However, you should not stop taking Celebrex® without consulting your physician. If, after discussion with your prescribing physician, you find that the risks outweigh the benefits, you and your physician can determine an alternative pain-relief treatment.
