A message from our Florida Avandia® Lawyers:
Avandia® has been used to help people with Type 2 diabetes effectively lower and control their blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, Avandia® has been shown to cause harmful side effects, some of which have led to fatalities. Residents of Florida who have taken Avandia® can contact our lawyers to learn more about the drug's side effects, its potential dangers, and possible legal action that can be taken in order to obtain compensation for health complications inflicted by use of Avandia®.
When the popular diabetes drug Rezulin® was pulled off the market after being linked to 63 liver poisoning deaths, Avandia® was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to provide diabetics with a safer alternative. Though Avandia® was never proven to be completely safe or without dangerous side effects, it was touted as a drug that provided the same benefits of Rezulin® with fewer risks. Despite giving Avandia® its approval, the FDA stated that it would continue to keep a close eye on Avandia® for reports of complications and side effects.
In 2001, after studies linked Avandia® to cardiac complications and other problems in some patients, the FDA sent GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Avandia®, a warning letter stating that the drug maker had been downplaying the risks of Avandia® in advertisements and other promotional materials. However, GlaxoSmithKline failed to follow the FDA's instructions to use bolded warnings about the heart-related side effects of Avandia®. Even today, the company continues to use inaccurate and misleading labels and promotional materials.
Multiple studies of Avandia® have documented the increased risk of heart attack stemming from use of the drug. Despite this, Avandia® remains on the market. Our Florida-based Avandia® lawyers are commited to helping those hurt by the side effects of the drug obtain compensation for the physical, emotional, and financial burdens they have faced. Contact our practice today to learn more about how we can help you.
Data from nearly 40 medical studies have shown that taking Avandia® increases a person's risk of suffering a heart attack by 43 percent. Researchers have also found that use of Avandia® increases the risk of dying from cardiovascular complications such as congestive heart failure, primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), and stroke by 64 percent.
