Florida - Accutane® Attorneys - The Lawyers of Timothy H. David, P.A.

Message from our Florida Accutane® attorneys:

Accutane® has been used to successfully treat severe acne in many patients, eliminating the potential of scarring and self-consciousness. However, Accutane® also has severe and dangerous side effects for some users. These include mental disorders, especially depression, and severe birth defects. In fact, those using Accutane® must sign a waiver acknowledging the risks of the drug. Female patients must have a documented negative pregnancy test before using the drug and a monthly negative pregnancy test to continue using it. The dangerous side effects of Accutane® have been widely acknowledged, especially after the son of a congressman commited suicide while using the drug in 2000. Awareness of Accutane®’s side effects grew, and the FDA instituted several new regulations. However, its effectiveness at treating acne keeps it on the market, though many people who have experienced its effects are battling to have the drug recalled.

If you, your baby, or a family member has been harmed by the effects of Accutane®, the Florida Accutane® lawyers at Timothy H. David, P.A. can help. Our practice serves Florida residents, and our Accutane® attorneys are commited to helping you receive compensation for the effects of this dangerous drug.

Accutane®’s Dangerous Side Effects

Birth Defects

Accutane® is extremely likely to cause birth defects, and women who take the drug should NOT become pregnant. If you do become pregnant, discontinue use of the drug immediately. Birth defects are severe, and can include:

  • Deformity
  • Severe mental retardation
  • Miscarriage
  • Early delivery
  • Death of the baby

Depression

Accutane® has been shown to cause depression in users, both during use and after use, and has been linked to suicide among a number of users. If you experience any of the following symptoms of depression, you should discontinue your use of Accutane®, report them to your physician immediately, and consider speaking to one of our Florida Accutane® lawyers.

  • Overwhelming sadness or crying
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Change in sleeping patterns
  • Change in behavior (increased irritability)
  • Change in weight or appetite
  • Change in ability to concentrate
  • Social withdrawal
  • Less energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Thoughts of self-mutilation or suicide

Who is at risk

To decrease the possibility of depression, be sure to tell your physician if you have ever experienced depression, psychosis, or other mental disorder, or are taking drugs for a mental condition, as Accutane® may aggravate the condition. According to their best judgment, your physician should only prescribe Accutane® if the benefits far outweigh the risks, and you should be fully informed of the risks of taking Accutane®. While taking Accutane®, you should be aware of your emotions and discontinue use of Accutane® if you notice any symptoms of depression.

If you are a woman, do not take Accutane® if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant during or immediately after your use of Accutane®. You should use two forms of birth control while using Accutane®.

What to do if you have been prescribed Accutane®

If you have been prescribed Accutane®, be aware of the risks of the drug and carefully determine whether they are outweighed by the benefits. If you decide that they are, take the drug with caution. However, if you are a woman, you should be careful to avoid becoming pregnant. Regardless of your gender, you should closely monitor your mental state and discontinue use of the drug if you experience any symptoms of depression, being sure to report these symptoms to your physician.

While many physicians fully inform their patients of the side effects of Accutane®, some do not. If your physician has prescribed Accutane® and they have not discussed the possibilities of depression or of birth defects, they are acting illegally. When faced with such a dangerous drug, our Florida Accutane® lawyers believe that you should be fully informed of all effects. If you have experienced side effects of Accutane®, and were not informed of these prior to prescription, you should contact our Florida Accutane® attorneys to schedule a consultation on how the law can protect you.

Seeking Help from Accutane® Attorneys

If you or a family member has been harmed by the side effects of Accutane®, you may be able to win compensation. Though the manufacturer of Accutane® does warn of its side effects, they are still responsible for the debilitating effects of their drug. While most users of Accutane® will not be affected by depression or birth defects, for those that do experience them, the effects can be lasting and emotionally damaging.
